The same words show up on the Lessons page, in the Resources packs, and on your class sections, and they mean one thing each. Look up the word you need and go back to what you were doing.

| Chapter | The largest piece of the library, one high-level topic, made of units. You can assign a whole chapter at once. |
| Unit | A coherent tested arc inside a chapter, usually two to four packages, ending in a unit test. |
| Package | One square on a chapter's grid. It covers one or two closely related topics and holds one to five articles, one lab, and one quiz. |
| Article | A reading inside a package. In grades 11-12 an article runs roughly 800 to 1,500 words. |
| Lab | An interactive activity the student explores and then saves a run of, with a short written reflection. Saving a run is half of what a package asks for. |
| Quiz | Five multiple-choice questions with four options each, at the end of a package. Answer keys are teacher-only. |
| Unit test | The longer test that closes a unit. The app draws 25 questions per attempt from the unit's bank, and the pass mark is 80 percent. |
| Activity | Any single assignable item: an article, a lab, a quiz, or a unit test. |
| Assignment | One activity given to one class, with a due day. |
| Scope | How much one assign covers: a whole chapter, one unit, or one activity. |
| Scheduled | An assignment set to publish later. Students see nothing and get no notification until the moment you picked. |
| Closed | An assignment that students can still read but can no longer work on. You can reopen it. |
| Extension | A later due day for one student on one assignment. That student always sees their own date; you keep seeing the class-wide one beside it. |
| Reviewed | A mark recording that you looked at a piece of submitted work. It carries no score and is not a grade. |
| Proficient | What Trace calls a package where the student has saved a lab run and answered every quiz question correctly. Either half alone is incomplete. |
| Mastered | A unit where the student passed the unit test at its threshold and holds every package in it proficient. |
| Coins | Progress records students collect for finished course activities and spend in the Shop on colors, hats, and furniture for their room. You neither award them nor take them away. |
| Badges | Achievements the app works out from a student's own progress. They carry points and a level, and the points are never spent. |
| Credits | What pays for the AI requests students make inside Trace. Your plan holds a monthly balance the class draws from, and you can grant credits to one student or to several at once. |
| Release | The published version of a chapter. A chapter's teacher resources publish with the release they were written against, so a guide is never served against material it does not match. |
| Preset | A ready-made worksheet for one lesson, assembled from the chapter's question bank. Opening one gives you your own editable copy, and the published preset stays as it was. |
| Template | A worksheet you saved as your own reusable starting point for later. |
| Sub-kit | The substitute lesson for one unit. It is self-contained and needs no devices or logins, and it prints as a student packet and a teacher packet with facilitation notes and answers. |
| Do-now | An opening question that poses the problem the lesson is about to solve. It is not a drill on yesterday's material. |
| Exit ticket | A short closing question that checks what the lesson just taught. Each lesson in a chapter pack has at least one. |
| Concept tag | The label on a question naming the idea it tests. It is one of the filters in the question bank. |
| Intended use | The label saying what a question is for: worksheet practice, assessment, a do-now, an exit ticket, or the sub-kit. It is what keeps secure assessment items out of routine practice. |
What this page does not do#
- It does not explain how to use any of these. The guide for each surface does that, and the course guide covers how mastery and coins fit together.
- It does not define the words the student side uses for its own surfaces, such as the Shop or the AI Tutor.
- It does not list the terms taught inside a chapter. Each chapter's pack carries its own glossary, which you can search, filter by letter, and print as a word wall.
