Assign work

The assign dialog, due dates, publishing later, closing and reopening, copying to another class, and giving one student more time.

Everything is assigned from one dialog, reached from the lesson library. Lessons in the sidebar opens it, and so does every New assignment and Assign a lesson button elsewhere in the app. Open the chapter you want, then choose how much of it to give out.

Choose how much to assign#

The dialog works in three sizes, and the size you pick decides which button you press first.

  • A whole chapter, from Assign chapter to your class in the right-hand panel.
  • One unit, either from the Assign button beside it in the Assign a single unit list, or from Assign unit to your class while that unit is open.
  • One activity, from the Assign button on its own row.

A chapter or a unit fans out into one assignment per published activity, and the whole batch either goes through or none of it does. The line above the buttons says how many that is before you commit, for example "This creates 12 assignments due Fri Aug 22."

Fill in the dialog#

Class defaults to the class you were last in and lists all of yours.

What to assign appears when there is more than one choice. It lists the whole chapter first and then each unit, and every option carries the number of activities it contains.

Due date takes a whole school day. Trace turns the day you pick into 11:59 PM local time and previews it underneath, for example "Due Fri Sep 26, 11:59 PM · in 7 days". Picking a day that has already passed shows "That day has already passed. Students see this as overdue straight away." A due date is optional.

Publish later is a checkbox. Ticking it reveals Publish date and Publish time, and the work stays invisible to students until that moment with no notification sent in the meantime. A moment in the past blocks the assign button.

Project submission shows only when you are assigning a single activity. It offers Not required, Saved project, and Project run, and it decides whether the student also turns in an Agent Builder project alongside the work. Leave it at Not required for a reading, a lab, or a quiz.

If the class already has some of what you picked, the dialog lists what and when, and leaves those out. Tick Assign the already-assigned ones again too (or Assign it again anyway for a single activity) to include them.

Press Assign, or Assign 12 activities when the batch is larger than one. A banner appears at the bottom of the screen naming what went where, with Undo and Dismiss. Undo removes exactly the assignments you just made.

Read the assignments list#

The Assignments section of your class holds every assignment as a card, grouped by chapter and sorted so the soonest due date comes first.

Each card carries a colored type chip (Lesson, Quiz, Lab, Unit test, Project, or Worksheet), a status badge, the due line, a Completed bar counting how many students have finished, and an "n waiting for review" badge when there is submitted work you have not marked.

The filter above the list has five settings: All, Open, Scheduled, Closed, and Past due. The three states mean different things to students.

  • Open. Students can open it and turn in work.
  • Scheduled. Hidden from students until the publish time. It does not appear on their Home page at all, and no notification has gone out.
  • Closed. Students can still read it, but cannot turn in new work.

Past due is a filter rather than a state. It collects anything with a due date behind you that is not still scheduled.

Close, reopen, edit, copy, or delete#

The menu at the top right of each card holds Close assignment (or Reopen assignment), Copy to another class, and Edit assignment. The same actions sit on the assignment's own page, which opens when you press its title, where they read Close (or Reopen), Copy to class, and Edit.

Edit assignment changes the Title and the Due date, and carries the same Publish now or Publish later choice as the assign dialog. A snow day moves this way, by rescheduling the work instead of deleting it and assigning it again. Choosing Publish now clears the schedule and releases the work as soon as you press Save changes.

Editing a worksheet assignment shows a panel headed "Editing the worksheet itself" with Open in Resources. Pages and questions live in the worksheet, and students keep the version you assigned until you assign it again.

Delete assignment sits at the bottom of the edit dialog behind a confirm. The confirm says students keep the work they already did in their own library, and that deleting only works before anyone has turned something in. To stop new work on an assignment somebody has already submitted to, close it instead.

Copy to another class offers Copy to and a Due date, defaulting to the original day. If the target class already has the same activity, the dialog says so by name and warns that copying gives those students a second assignment for the same work. The copy opens right away and a publish-later schedule does not travel with it. Worksheet assignments cannot be copied this way, so the action is hidden for them.

Give one student more time#

Open the assignment's own page and use the Extensions section. Choose the person under Student, pick a New due date, and press Add extension. Existing extensions are listed as "Extended to Fri Aug 29 for Ana Reyes", each with its own date box and a Remove button. Changing a date there commits when you click away or press Enter, and a half-typed day is put back with a note saying so.

Every due date a student sees is their own. Their assignment page, their Home page, and the decision about whether their work is overdue all use the extended day. You keep seeing the class-wide date, with the per-student rows beside it.

Work through what comes in#

The assignment's page counts the class as not started, in progress, and finished, and the same three buckets filter the student rows. When somebody has not started, Message everyone who hasn't started writes them each a private message naming the assignment and its due day.

For a quiz or a unit test, Questions the class missed lists each question with how many students missed it, phrased as "14 of 24 missed Q3". Its own description says this is what students answered and not a score, and that nothing there is stored.

On submitted projects and worksheets, Mark reviewed records that you looked and Write a note sends the student a short piece of feedback while marking the work reviewed at the same time. Trace does not assign a grade, so a review mark and a note carry no score, and there is no score column anywhere behind them.

What this page does not do#

  • You cannot assign to part of a class. Everyone on the roster gets the work, and per-student differences are handled with extensions.
  • A chapter or unit assignment is all or nothing. One unpublished activity fails the whole batch rather than assigning half a chapter.
  • Nothing here produces a score, a percentage, or an export with marks in it.
  • A scheduled assignment sends no notification when you create it, so students learn about it when it publishes.
  • Copying an assignment does not carry over its closed state or its schedule.
