Keep your own files

My files holds your worksheets, notes, and saved chapter slides. How to create, organize, search, and import into it.

My files in the sidebar, under Classroom, is your own storage inside Trace. It describes itself as "Worksheets, homework, slides, and notes, organized your way." Nothing a student does appears here.

The first time you open it, Trace creates four folders for you, called Worksheets, Homework, Slides, and Notes, and files any worksheets you already made into the first of them. You can rename them, nest them, and add your own.

Create something new#

Three buttons sit at the top right of the page, and each one creates inside the folder you are currently looking at.

  • New folder asks for a Folder name.
  • New note asks for a Title and then opens the note editor.
  • New worksheet asks for a Title and a Chapter, then opens the worksheet builder. The chapter matters because, as the dialog says, "The worksheet draws its question bank from this chapter." A new worksheet starts blank, and you add questions from that bank in the editor.

The Chapter dropdown lists only chapters whose teacher pack has been imported. When none have been, the dialog says so instead of offering an empty list.

Find a file and move between folders#

The path across the top starts at My files and adds a button for each folder you have opened, so you can jump back to any level. Pressing a folder row opens it.

The box marked Search all files searches everything you own, not just the folder in front of you. While a search is running, each result shows its full path underneath its name, so you can tell two similarly named worksheets apart. Clear search puts the folder view back.

Files are listed newest-changed first, with a type badge (Worksheet, Template, Note, or Slides) and the day they last changed. A worksheet's caption shows its revision number, saved slides say "From chapter resources", and a note says "Markdown note".

Rename, move, download, and delete#

The menu at the end of each row holds the same actions for a folder or a file.

Rename changes the name in place. Move to folder opens a Destination dropdown listing My files (top level) and every folder you own, indented to show nesting, and a folder cannot be moved inside itself. Press Move here to finish. Download appears only on saved slides and fetches the original file.

Delete behaves differently by type, and the confirm says which. Deleting a folder moves everything inside it up one level and deletes nothing else. Deleting a worksheet removes it and its whole revision history and cannot be undone. Deleting any other file removes that file.

Write and edit a note#

A note is Markdown. Opening one gives you an editable title at the top, a Write tab with the text box, and a Preview tab that renders it the way a printed page will look. Headings, lists, and tables all work.

The header shows whether the note is Saved or has Unsaved changes, and Save commits your edits. Download .md saves a copy to your computer under the note's title. Back to My files returns to the list.

Bring a chapter's slides and substitute kits in#

Chapter resources live at /teacher/content, reached through Resources in the sidebar. On a chapter's Decks and sub-kits tab, the Unit resources list gives each unit a Save to My files menu with up to three entries.

  • Slide deck files a link to that unit's deck under Slides. The row that appears has one action, Download, because the deck itself stays with the chapter release.
  • Teacher kit as editable note and Student kit as editable note copy the unit's substitute kit into Notes as a note called, for instance, "Unit 1 sub kit (teacher)". It is a copy, so editing it changes nothing in the chapter pack and the pack changing does not touch your version.

Saving something shows a short confirmation on the resources page, such as "Sub kit saved to My files as an editable note."

What this page does not do#

  • No student work is stored here. Submissions, quiz answers, and saved lab runs live with the assignment and in the class Progress section.
  • Files are yours alone. There is no sharing with a co-teacher, no shared department folder, and no link you can send someone.
  • Nothing here is assigned by being put in a folder. A worksheet is given to a class with Assign worksheet inside the worksheet builder.
  • There is no way to upload a document from your computer. What lives here is worksheets and notes you made in Trace, plus slides and kits saved from a chapter's resources.
  • Deleting a worksheet here deletes the worksheet everywhere, including its revision history.
